Principal’s Update 23 February

GETTING TO KNOW YOU INTERVIEWS

March 6 and 7 will be our Getting to Know You Interview times, providing you and your child a one-on-one session with their teacher, as part of our commitment to building a strong relationship with every child in class and for us to best know your child, their needs and strengths. Your child’s teacher should have sent out information regarding a short survey to complete. We ask that you complete this survey, as this will provide invaluable information to us about your child. Please contact your child’s teacher if support is needed.

COMMUNITY/WELCOME BBQ & OPEN-AIR CONCERT

We are very excited to host our upcoming Community/Welcome BBQ on Thursday March the 14th from 5pm to 7pm. There will be a free sausage sizzle, Mini Farmyard Incursion and a gelato cart available. The gelato cart will require pre-orders and information about this will has been sent home with your child.  Pre-orders are required back at school by 7 March.

The gelato does contain traces of nuts and gluten. If you child has an allergy or anaphylaxis, we ask that you provide your own ice-gream/gelato if you wish.

As an added event to this evening, we have been provided with a special one-off offer from the STOMP Dance company, for an Open-Air Concert, between 4pm and 5pm. Each class will be taught a dance during school hours to perform by professional dance choreographers in the weeks leading up to the 14th. We are very excited to be able to provide the experience of performance and dance for our students and will complement our school production later this year in Term 3. Due to the one off offer from STOMP, there will be no cost to families for your child to participate in this event.

BELLE VUE PRIMARY SCHOOL’S COMMITTMENT TO CHILD SAFETY

Belle Vue PS is a child safe organisation which welcomes all children, young people and their families.

We have no tolerance for child abuse and take proactive steps to identify and manage any risks of harm to students in our school environment. We are committed to providing environments where our students are safe. Child safety is a shared responsibility. Every person involved in our school has an important role in promoting child safety and wellbeing and promptly raising any issues or concerns about a child’s safety. Particular attention will be paid to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children and children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as the safety of children with a disability. Our child safe policies, strategies and practices are inclusive of the needs of all students.

In its planning, decision-making and operations, Belle Vue Primary School will:

·       Establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.

·       Ensure that child safety and wellbeing are embedded across all levels of school leadership, governance and culture.

· Empower students to participate in decisions affecting them.

· Engage families and communities to promote child safety and wellbeing.

· Ensure equity is upheld and diverse needs are respected both in policy and practice.

· Ensure that all members of the community working with children are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing practice.

· Ensure that processes for complaints are child focused.

· Provide all staff and volunteers with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children safe.

· Promote safety and wellbeing in both physical and online environments.

· Regularly review our child safe practices and policies and improve as required.

· Implement child safe practices.

· Share information appropriately and lawfully with other organisations where the safety and wellbeing of children is at risk.

· Ensure children know who to talk with if they are worried or are feeling unsafe, and that they are comfortable and encouraged to raise such issues.

· Report suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment promptly to the appropriate authorities.

eSAFETY, INTERNET, SOCIAL MEDIA AND DIGITAL DEVICES

As a school we are committed to educating and promoting safe and respectful online behaviours and practices. We promote a positive and supportive learning culture through our whole school wellbeing programs, including Zones of Regulation, Respectful Relationships and our Belle Vue Best Start Program. Our pro-active approach helps to ensure all of our students conduct themselves in a positive and respectful manner at all times, both in person and online. However, this is not the sole responsibility of the school or classroom teachers and we need to work in partnership to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students as they learn to navigate the online world. As a parent/carer, you have a significant role to play in modelling, educating and supporting safe, respectful behaviours online in a quickly evolving online environment. If you have any concerns about your child safety when online, please reach out to your child’s teacher or visit the eSafety Commissioner Website for further advice and guidance.
